Aludean
Lu Skacej and Dean Colls are Melbourne based sculptors who worked in design, tertiary education, film and theatre and as commissioned sculptors before establishing Aludean. Since 1997 Colls and Skacej have worked collaboratively to produce a distinctive folio of artworks for both the private and public sector. The name Aludean is a play on both their names that aptly illustrates their collaborative approach to the creative process. Merging their different backgrounds, skills and approaches has allowed them to produce a broad spectrum of work from figurative sculptures to minimalist poetic landscapes in a variety of materials including concrete, bronze, steel and fibreglass. This diversity also reflects a fundamental intention to approach each project as a new enquiry, creatively investigating and engaging with all the elements: client, audience and physical structure, without superimposing a preconceived aesthetic. The artists create sculpture that invites the viewer to respond and interact with their surrounding space. Their work can be found in private and corporate collections and commercial developments as well as public collections including the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, the McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park and the new Peninsula Freeway.
